Romania: Hidroelectrica completes major maintenance phase at Portile de Fier hydropower plant

Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica has successfully completed a significant phase of maintenance on Unit 1 at the Portile de Fier hydropower plant. The overhaul project, which began in July 2023, involved comprehensive maintenance work aimed at ensuring the unit’s efficiency and stability.

The maintenance contract was awarded to Hidroserv, with part of the work subcontracted to UCMH Resita. This project marks a major milestone for Hidroelectrica, requiring a highly coordinated effort among its subsidiaries and partners to execute complex technical operations crucial for the stability of Romania’s energy infrastructure.

Factory testing of the fully equipped rotor took place between December 2023 and September 2024, followed by its reinstallation at Portile de Fier I, which began in October 2024. By February 14, 2025, the primary maintenance phase was completed, and performance tests, along with system integration checks, are now underway. These final adjustments are the last step before the unit becomes fully operational, playing a vital role in maintaining optimal performance within Romania’s national hydropower system.

The successful completion of this phase underscores Hidroelectrica’s commitment to efficient and sustainable energy production. The next step involves a series of complex tests scheduled to run until March 14, 2025, to verify the unit’s operational stability and ensure the overall reliability of the system.

Hidroelectrica continues to invest in modernizing its infrastructure and adopting innovative solutions, reinforcing its position as a key player in Romania’s energy transition, and enhancing sustainability, security, and efficiency in the country’s electricity sector.
