PPC Renewables Romania is advancing its renewable energy initiatives by integrating a new battery storage system at its Topolog wind farm in Tulcea county. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance the flexibility and reliability of the country’s energy sector, particularly as it seeks to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix.
The upcoming battery energy storage system will have a capacity of 13.5 MW and 27 MWh, intended to support the existing wind generation capabilities at the Topolog site. The investment, which amounts to approximately 6 million euros, will be financed through a combination of private funds and European support, exemplifying the significance of blended financing in contemporary energy projects.
Currently, the Topolog wind farm boasts an installed capacity of 27 MW, utilizing a variety of turbines that can operate efficiently even in suboptimal wind conditions. Its strategic location is characterized by robust wind potential, making it an ideal candidate for hybrid solutions that integrate both generation and storage technologies. This integration is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency.
Funding for this project includes contributions from the European Union’s Modernization Fund, which aims to enhance electricity storage associated with renewable energy sources. While this grant covers a fraction of the total eligible costs, the majority of funding will be secured by PPC Renewables itself, reflecting a co-financing model that underscores the importance of private investment in sustainable energy initiatives.
The addition of storage capabilities is anticipated to bolster system reliability and optimize energy delivery from the Topolog wind farm. Furthermore, it aligns with Romania’s broader objectives to modernize its electricity sector and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
