Romania: EBRD considers financing for 1.2 GW Dama solar project

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is assessing financing for a significant photovoltaic initiative in Romania, which is poised to become one of the largest solar power facilities in the region. This project, known as the Dama Solar project, is being developed by West Power Investments, a special-purpose vehicle that operates under the auspices of Rezolv Energy, a company dedicated to renewable energy solutions.

Located in Arad County, specifically within the communes of Grăniceri and Pilu, the Dama Solar project will cover an area exceeding 1,000 hectares. With an anticipated installed capacity of approximately 1,239 MW, this facility is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering Romania’s renewable energy landscape.

The project’s infrastructure will include extensive ground-mounted solar panels complemented by inverter systems. Additionally, it will feature a medium-voltage internal network and essential access infrastructure. A high-voltage transformer station will facilitate the connection to Romania’s national electricity grid through an underground cable link. This integration is vital for enhancing the efficiency and reliability of electricity distribution across the country.

Upon becoming operational, the Dama Solar project is projected to yield significant environmental benefits. It is estimated that the facility could lead to reductions in carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 619,000 tons annually, aligning with broader sustainability goals within the energy sector.

Rezolv Energy has been active since its establishment in 2022 by UK-based investor Actis. The company has rapidly expanded its footprint in Southeastern Europe with a portfolio encompassing around 2.3 GW of renewable energy projects. This strategic growth underscores the increasing emphasis on renewable sources as part of regional energy policies aimed at enhancing sustainability and energy security.
