In April 2026, the power markets in Southeast Europe exhibited significant structural fragmentation, with a marked shift towards a system increasingly influenced by intraday imbalances rather than traditional fuel benchmarks. This evolving landscape underscores the complexities of regional dispatch signals and trade flow monitoring.
Day-ahead baseload prices displayed a notable divergence, establishing two distinct trading corridors. Central markets, including Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia, recorded prices in the range of €96–103/MWh, while southeastern hubs such as Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania remained lower at €75–85/MWh. Serbia emerged as a critical volatility node, with prices surging to €96.75/MWh (+14.3 €/MWh), despite a generally softer regional market.
This price disparity can be attributed to localized congestion and varying access to imports, particularly along the Serbia–Croatia corridor where cross-border allocations became notably tighter during peak demand hours. Such conditions highlight the challenges faced by market participants in navigating supply constraints.
Demand for electricity remained robust throughout the month, with total consumption reaching 28,328 MW (+1,058 MW day-on-day). This increase suggests that electricity load is now more firmly rooted in industrial and structural demands rather than fluctuations caused by temperature changes.
On the supply side, total generation capacity rose to 27,624 MW (+3,014 MW), driven primarily by hydroelectric sources contributing 6,252 MW (+1,001 MW) and solar energy adding 5,174 MW (+557 MW). Notably, midday solar generation exceeded 20% of the region’s total supply during peak hours, further complicating intraday balance dynamics.
Despite an increase in overall generation capacity, electricity prices remained elevated in constrained areas. This observation reinforces the notion that system flexibility has become a more critical factor than sheer supply levels in determining market prices across Southeast Europe.
