In December 2025, North Macedonia reported a substantial increase in electricity production, driven primarily by hydropower and combined heat and power (CHP) generation. The total electricity consumption for the month reached 821,436 MWh, with natural gas consumption at 47.06 million cubic meters, coal usage totaling 261,591 tons, and petroleum products accounting for 100,606 tons. Domestic production covered an impressive 78.4% of the electricity consumed, underscoring the country’s reliance on local energy resources.
The overall gross electricity production during this period was recorded at 644,061 MWh, reflecting an 8.4% rise compared to December 2024. Thermal power plants contributed 159,572 MWh (24.8% of the total), although this represented a significant decline of 34.3% year-on-year. In contrast, hydropower plants generated 217,104 MWh—a notable increase of 57.7%—while CHP plants produced 167,544 MWh, marking a growth of 24.9%. Additionally, wind farms contributed 31,571 MWh (4.9%), biogas facilities produced 4,445 MWh, and solar power installations generated a total of 63,825 MWh (9.9%), including contributions from prosumers.
Electricity imports decreased to 270,383 MWh in December 2025 from the previous year’s figure of 317,074 MWh. Exports also saw an increase to reach 93,008 MWh compared to 81,812 MWh in December 2024. The data indicates a marked growth in both hydropower and CHP production capabilities that have helped mitigate declines in thermal generation output. This trend reflects North Macedonia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its energy independence through domestic generation while meeting the majority of its national electricity demand.
