North Macedonia is preparing a new investment cycle in the Crni Drim hydropower system, focused on extensive refurbishment of HPP Globocica and HPP Spilje. The programme targets strengthening domestic generation using existing assets. Both plants have been in operation for more than half a century, with Globocica entering service in 1965 and Spilje in 1969.
Instead of replacing the facilities, the planned works are designed to extend their operating lives for decades. The scope is expected to include upgrades covering generators, rotors, bearings, block transformers and hydromechanical equipment. The stated aim is to improve reliability and efficiency while reducing operational risks linked to ageing plant.
Refurbishment scope and current asset performance
Globocica has already been uprated from an original 34.5 MW to 42.5 MW. Over its operating life, the plant has generated more than 10,500 GWh. Spilje has installed capacity of 84 MW.
Globocica’s output figures for 2026 are also part of the rationale for refurbishment planning. The plant produced 120 GWh in the first half of 2026, which was almost 19% above plan. That level was equivalent to around 80% of its full-year target within six months.
Potential expansion and hydro system modernisation
The Crni Drim system could also accommodate additional projects in the longer term. Options under consideration include Globocica 2, Spilje 2, and a floating solar plant on the Spilje reservoir. In parallel, North Macedonia plans to modernise systems that control water releases and water levels in Lake Ohrid and the Crni Drim.
This approach shifts the investment programme from conventional refurbishment toward broader optimisation of hydro operations across the system. The planned upgrades are intended to support continued use of dispatchable renewable generation already installed at Globocica and Spilje as part of efforts to reduce electricity-import exposure.
