New 80 MW Wind Farm in Croatia Aims to Supply Power to 60,000 Households

A significant development in Croatia’s renewable energy landscape is underway with the proposed Cemernica wind farm, which aims to deliver electricity to approximately 60,000 households. The project is being spearheaded by VSB Obnovljiva Energija Hrvatska and is located in the southern region, specifically within the municipality of Dicmo and the town of Trilj.

The planned capacity of the Cemernica facility is set at 80 MW, featuring a total of 11 wind turbines. This initiative is positioned as a strategic move to bolster Croatia’s domestic energy production while simultaneously decreasing its reliance on imported electricity, which has been a growing concern for energy security in the region.

VSB representatives have emphasized the necessity for a diversified mix of renewable energy sources to enhance energy security. They argue that while rooftop solar installations are crucial, larger scale projects like wind farms are vital for satisfying national energy demands and ensuring a stable supply throughout the year.

The economic implications of the Cemernica project extend beyond energy generation. It is projected to contribute over 300,000 euros annually to local municipal budgets, thereby aiding investments in essential infrastructure and public services, as well as addressing other developmental priorities in the area.

Currently, the Cemernica project is in its preparatory phase, focusing on critical data collection activities such as wind measurements and conducting an environmental impact study. Following this initial phase, the project will proceed to public consultation and permitting processes before finalizing turbine placements and commencing construction.
