IAEA offers support to Serbia for strengthening nuclear energy capacity and advancing national programs

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed its readiness to fully assist Serbian institutions in enhancing national capabilities and advancing nuclear expertise to support energy development. This commitment was conveyed to the Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) by IAEA Deputy Director General Hua Liu.

The IAEA’s support will be provided through a variety of regional and interregional technical assistance projects. These initiatives include strengthening the capacity of educational institutions to sustainably apply nuclear technology, refining national legal frameworks, and helping countries build or expand nuclear energy programs by establishing the necessary infrastructure for safe implementation.

In response to SRBATOM’s proposal, which was submitted in December of the previous year, Hua Liu emphasized that the IAEA sees the development of a national technical support project as a crucial tool to provide focused and comprehensive assistance to Serbia in advancing its nuclear energy program.

This cooperation comes in the context of the recent adoption of amendments to Serbia’s Law on Energy in November, which lifted the country’s 1989 moratorium on nuclear energy. This move removes the ban on nuclear power plant construction, a policy originally put in place after the Chernobyl disaster.
