HUPX day-ahead prices increase in May 2026 amid lower traded volumes

In May 2026, the Hungarian energy exchange HUPX reported higher electricity prices on its day-ahead market. The average price reached 106.51 euros/MWh. Compared with April, when the average baseload price was 96.55 euros/MWh, this equates to a 10.3% month-on-month increase.

For the peak load segment, the average HUPX DAM price stood at 62.16 euros/MWh. The month-on-month change for this segment was 2.9%. Trading figures for May show an overall strengthening in prices alongside a smaller move on peak hours.

Day-ahead volumes and member participation

Day-ahead trading activity declined versus April. Total traded volume in May amounted to 2.59 million MWh, which is 6.3% lower than the 2.44 million MWh recorded in April. On a yearly basis, volumes were higher by around 4%, compared with May 2025 when the volume was 2.49 million MWh.

The number of registered participants increased on the day-ahead market. HUPX counted 124 registered members for the day-ahead segment, four more than in the previous month. This change occurred alongside the month-on-month shift in both pricing and traded volumes.

Intraday continuous market turnover

The intraday continuous market also saw reduced activity in May 2026. Total traded volume fell to 1,027,927 MWh. This represents a 5.5% decrease compared with April 2026.

Market participation remained steady across the intraday segment despite lower volumes. The intraday continuous market recorded 118 members in May 2026. This figure reflects ongoing engagement from market players as short-term trading activity declined.
