Hungary Sees Significant Price Drops on HUPX Amid Declining Volumes

In February 2026, the Hungarian energy exchange HUPX reported a notable decline in electricity prices on its day-ahead market (DAM). The average electricity price fell to 113.29 euros/MWh, representing a substantial 24.7% decrease from January’s average of 150.41 euros/MWh. This trend was mirrored in the average peak price, which dropped to 122.26 euros/MWh, a decrease of 30.7%.

The trading volume on the day-ahead market also experienced a downturn, totaling 2.95 million MWh, which is a reduction of 12.7% compared to January’s figure of 3.41 million MWh. However, this volume still represents a significant increase of 21% compared to February 2025, when it stood at 2.44 million MWh. Meanwhile, the intraday continuous market recorded a trading volume of 973,062 MWh, reflecting an 11.5% decline from the previous month.

<pDespite the lower trading activity, HUPX maintained a steady participation level with 116 registered members on its day-ahead market and 108 members on the intraday continuous market in February 2026. This stability in membership indicates ongoing interest and engagement within the market, even amid fluctuating trading volumes and prices.

<pThe recent trends in Hungary's electricity market highlight the dynamic nature of power trading and the potential impacts of supply-demand fluctuations on pricing structures. As market participants navigate these changes, understanding the underlying factors driving price adjustments will be crucial for strategic decision-making in this evolving landscape.
