Hungary prepares for winter with ample natural gas reserves

The Hungarian Ministry of Energy has announced that the country is well-prepared for the upcoming winter, with 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas stored in underground facilities. Last year, Hungarian households consumed just over 3 billion cubic meters, while industry required an additional 5.5 billion. Notably, over 70% of the total gas consumption, approximately 8.5 billion cubic meters, was secured before severe cold weather set in.

This year, annual consumption is expected to fall below 8 billion cubic meters, meaning the reserves will likely cover a larger portion of actual needs. The European Union has set a goal for member states to have gas storage facilities 90% full by November 1, and Hungary achieved this target by the start of September.

Additionally, gas supplies are flowing smoothly due to adequate imports and domestic production. Hungarian household gas prices remain the lowest in Europe, a result of the government’s efforts to keep utility costs manageable.
