Hidroelectrica, the leading electricity producer in Romania, has taken a significant step in enhancing its hydroelectric capabilities by announcing a tender for the Nehoiașu II hydropower plant and the upgrade of a 110 kV transformer station. This initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to bolster renewable energy generation and improve the national electricity infrastructure.
The estimated value of the contract is approximately 49.5 million euros, excluding VAT, and will be executed on a turnkey basis. This comprehensive contract encompasses all phases of delivery, including technical design, manufacturing, transportation, installation, testing, commissioning, and staff training. The timeline for implementation is projected to span 44 months.
The planned enhancements will occur within the Surduc-Siriu hydropower development area, which covers parts of Buzău, Vrancea, and Covasna counties. This project is seen as crucial for unlocking further hydropower potential along the Buzău River and enhancing the overall performance and responsiveness of Romania’s electricity grid.
Key components of this investment include the installation of a complete hydro unit featuring a turbine, generator, and associated automation and protection systems. Additionally, auxiliary hydromechanical equipment will be integrated into the project. The upgrade will also expand the existing high-voltage substation while incorporating SCADA, communication networks, and security systems. Company officials highlight that these developments are aimed at increasing balancing capacity and system flexibility while aligning with Hidroelectrica’s objectives to modernize its generation portfolio.
The completion of HPP Nehoiașu II is pivotal for finalizing the Surduc-Nehoiașu hydropower cascade project—one of Hidroelectrica’s most significant pending initiatives within its investment pipeline.
Evaluation of bids for this tender will employ a quality-to-price methodology rather than focusing solely on cost. Factors such as technical performance, guaranteed operating parameters, and warranty conditions will play critical roles in determining the successful bidder.
As Romania’s largest producer of renewable electricity, Hidroelectrica operates 188 hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 6.4 GW. The company also manages the Crucea wind farm, contributing an additional 108 MW to its energy portfolio. Furthermore, Hidroelectrica holds a prominent position in Romania’s retail electricity market based on customer base size.
