Greece: The first phase of offshore wind development launched

Greece plans to build its first offshore wind farms by identifying areas for private development in a draft plan.

As sea bound country, Greece has a strong, steady wind suitable for producing energy. Greece is aiming to build an installed capacity of at least 2 GW from offshore wind by 2030, representing 10% of its onshore capacity.

The draft plan includes 25 eligible development areas in the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean sea will become available in two time periods, some between 2025 and as late as 2032, and some later.

The zones cover a total area of 2,711 square kilometres, with an estimated minimum capacity of 12.4 GW. The majority of zones are suitable for floating technology.
