Greece Evaluates Nuclear Energy’s Role in Future Energy Strategy

In a significant policy shift, Greece is exploring the potential inclusion of nuclear energy within its long-term energy strategy, as announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a recent nuclear energy summit held in Paris. This initiative is driven by escalating energy costs across Europe, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

The Greek Government intends to form a high-level ministerial committee tasked with evaluating the feasibility of integrating new-generation reactors, especially small modular reactors (SMRs), into Greece’s electricity framework. The committee’s mandate will include assessing how these technologies could bolster Greece’s future energy supply, ultimately providing a formal recommendation to the government.

Mitsotakis highlighted that advancements in nuclear technology and increasing electricity demand are compelling nations to reassess their energy strategies. He pointed out that despite the growth of renewable sources, reliable baseload generation remains essential for stable electricity production, a domain where nuclear energy excels.

<pHowever, the discourse surrounding nuclear power remains contentious in Greece, with public opinion split on its viability. Mitsotakis emphasized the necessity for an open and balanced discussion, devoid of ideological biases, to thoroughly evaluate both the benefits and risks associated with nuclear technology.

The Prime Minister also criticized Europe’s historical shift away from nuclear power, asserting that this decision resulted in a significant loss of low-emission electricity sources. Over the past two decades, EU nuclear generation has declined by approximately 276 TWh, while solar output reached around 254 TWh in 2023. This data underscores the challenges faced when attempting to replace lost nuclear capacity solely with solar energy.

Nuclear energy is experiencing a resurgence in interest across Europe. Countries with existing nuclear facilities are planning expansions, while others that previously abandoned nuclear technology are reconsidering their positions. Mitsotakis indicated that Greece aims to be an active participant in discussions regarding nuclear solutions for both energy production and potential applications in maritime transport.

The Greek Government has yet to finalize any decisions regarding the establishment of nuclear facilities. However, it recognizes the importance of evaluating all available options amid rising electricity demand and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
