In the second week of June, electricity demand increased across most major European markets compared with the previous week. Italy posted the largest rise at 7.3%, followed by Germany with an increase of 5.7%. The figures reflected a rebound after two consecutive weeks of declining demand.
Demand growth was also recorded in France, Spain, Belgium, and Portugal. The reported increases ranged from 0.5% in France and Spain to 3.9% in Portugal. Spain extended its positive trend, recording its fourth consecutive week of demand growth.
Temperature changes support higher consumption
Average temperatures rose in most of the analyzed countries during the same period, contributing to higher electricity consumption. Portugal recorded the largest temperature increase at 1.1°C, while France saw a rise of 0.1°C. Italy and Spain experienced temperature increases of 0.7°C and 0.8°C, respectively.
Temperatures declined in Great Britain, Belgium, and Germany. The drops ranged from 0.9°C in Great Britain to 1.7°C in Germany. These temperature movements aligned with changes in demand across the markets covered.
Public holidays and business activity affect demand
In Italy and Portugal, electricity demand received additional support from a rebound in business activity after public holidays. Italy’s reference holiday was Republic Day on June 2. Portugal’s was Corpus Christi on June 4.
Germany also saw a recovery in business activity following regional celebrations of Corpus Christi. This contributed to higher consumption levels during the period under review. The impact was described alongside the broader week-on-week demand increases.
AleaSoft forecast points to further weekly growth
Ahead of the next reporting period, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects electricity demand to increase across all major European markets in the third week of June. The company’s outlook indicates a continued upward direction for regional consumption, AleaSoft reports . This expectation follows the demand gains seen during the second week of June.
