Croatia: Krk LNG terminal achieves major milestones and sets sights on sustainable future

In just over three and a half years since it began operations, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Omisalj on the island of Krk has made substantial contributions to Croatia’s energy infrastructure. The terminal has delivered 8.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the Croatian gas transport system and has regasified more than 13.7 million cubic meters of LNG. In this period, the terminal has managed the transfer of 100 LNG transport ships and nearly 400 trucks carrying liquefied natural gas.

The Krk LNG terminal was officially commissioned on January 29, 2021, alongside the launch of the Zlobin-Omišalj gas pipeline.

Looking forward, LNG Hrvatska, the terminal’s operator, is planning several initiatives aimed at sustainability. These include projects for carbon capture and solar energy utilization. Additionally, the company intends to develop supply stations for LNG, hydrogen, and other eco-friendly fuels, and support the conversion of Adriatic vessels to use more environmentally-friendly fuels.
