Croatia Advances Geothermal Exploration Following Promising Resource Discoveries

Following significant findings in geothermal resources, Croatia is set to enhance its exploration initiatives, with new sites earmarked in Sisak, Karlovac, and Vukovar. These developments come on the heels of successful geothermal assessments conducted in various cities, which have bolstered confidence in the nation’s geothermal potential.

Exploration efforts between 2021 and 2026 have revealed substantial geothermal capacity across Velika Gorica, Zaprešić, Osijek, and Vinkovci. Marijan Krpan, head of the Hydrocarbon Agency, noted that these locations demonstrated water temperatures reaching between 90°C and over 100°C. This performance indicates an exceptionally high success rate when compared to international standards.

Such temperature profiles are particularly advantageous for the implementation of district heating systems. The current phase aims to transition geothermal energy from exploration to practical application. This next step will involve additional drilling to establish production and reinjection wells necessary for optimal operational efficiency. Collaboration with local municipalities and heating operators is planned to expedite the commercial rollout of these systems.

This initiative is supported by funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which has allocated over €50 million specifically for geothermal research. Officials emphasize that this investment is vital for reducing carbon emissions and advancing Croatia’s energy transition objectives.

Local government representatives express optimism regarding the long-term benefits of these geothermal projects. They anticipate reductions in heating costs, enhanced energy security, and a consistent year-round energy supply as key outcomes. Some forecasts indicate that commercial geothermal heating could commence within a few years following the completion of further drilling activities.

Beyond the initial identified sites, experts suggest that the geological characteristics of the Pannonian Basin could facilitate broader geothermal development across the region. This potential may lead to an increased adoption of renewable energy sources within Croatia and neighboring areas.
