Recent data from the Bulgarian transmission system operator ESO reveals a complex shift in the country’s energy landscape during the early weeks of 2026. From January 1 to February 1, Bulgaria’s electricity production saw a slight decline of 0.12% year-on-year, totaling 4.34 TWh. This reduction comes amid a backdrop of rising electricity consumption, which surged by 10.05%, reaching 4.62 TWh. The disparity between consumption and generation has resulted in the country becoming a net importer of electricity, with net imports recorded at 283 GWh.
The performance of Bulgaria’s baseload power plants, primarily coal and nuclear facilities, has been noteworthy as well. These plants produced a combined total of 3.32 TWh, reflecting a significant decrease of 10.4% compared to the same period last year. This decline indicates a diminishing reliance on conventional energy sources as they contribute less to overall generation.
In contrast to the traditional generation methods, the contribution from renewable energy sources has seen a marked increase. Electricity generated from renewables in the transmission network rose by an impressive 22.34%, amounting to 273.2 GWh. However, it is important to note that renewable output connected to the distribution network experienced a modest decline of 3.42%, totaling 226.6 GWh.
This evolving scenario underscores significant shifts in Bulgaria’s energy mix and highlights ongoing challenges related to balancing rising demand with production capabilities. The increased reliance on imports may necessitate strategic adjustments in energy policy and infrastructure investment moving forward.
