In a significant advancement for energy infrastructure, the renewable energy firm Enery has successfully commissioned a large-scale battery energy storage system in southeastern Bulgaria. This facility, located near Nova Zagora, stands out as one of the largest operational battery storage installations in Central and Eastern Europe, with a total storage capacity of 601.8 MWh and an installed power output of 150 MW.
The primary function of this standalone installation is to bolster power system stability. It achieves this by absorbing surplus electricity during off-peak periods and discharging it back into the grid when demand peaks. This capability is crucial for integrating more renewable energy sources, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuel-generated electricity.
The facility is strategically connected to the national transmission network through a newly built 33/110-kV substation. It comprises 120 battery units, each with an approximate capacity of 5 MW. This modular design allows for adaptable operations and efficient energy dispatch, making it a vital asset for grid management.
The operational management of this facility will be conducted via a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with the global energy trading company Vitol. This arrangement ensures that the stored energy is integrated into the market effectively and optimized commercially.
The financial backing for this ambitious project was provided through a green lending package, arranged by DSK Bank, part of the Hungarian OTP Group. This reflects ongoing support from the financial sector for large-scale projects aimed at facilitating the transition to sustainable energy infrastructure.
The commissioning of the Nova Zagora battery storage project represents a pivotal development in enhancing battery storage capacity across Southeastern Europe. As countries in this region increasingly invest in modernizing their electricity systems, such initiatives are essential for accommodating higher proportions of renewable energy within national grids.
