Bosnia and Herzegovina: Energy production and trade trends in October 2024

In October 2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s gross electricity production totaled 1,142 GWh, a decrease from 1,216 GWh in the same month of the previous year. The production was largely dominated by thermal power plants, which accounted for 61.2% of the total, while hydropower plants contributed 34.8%, and solar and wind power plants made up 4%.

The net electricity production from hydropower plants reached 395 GWh in October 2024, marking a 37.6% increase compared to the same month in 2023. In contrast, thermal power plants produced 627 GWh, a 13.8% decline from the previous year. Meanwhile, electricity generation from renewable sources, including wind and solar, totaled 46 GWh.

Electricity imports saw a significant rise of 36.4%, reaching 435 GWh in October 2024, compared to 319 GWh in October 2023. Exports also grew by 5%, amounting to 584 GWh, up from 556 GWh in the same period last year.

The production of lignite in the country reached 620,000 tons in October 2024, reflecting a 16.8% increase compared to the previous year. Brown coal production also rose by 1.3%, totaling 558,000 tons.

Natural gas imports grew by 25.6%, with a total of 16.51 million cubic meters in October 2024, up from 13.15 million cubic meters in the same month of 2023.
