Bosnia and Herzegovina produced 15,036 GWh of electricity in 2022, according to data from the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERK). That is 2,019 GWh or 12% less than in 2021.
In the same period, total electricity consumption amounted to 12,058 GWh, which is 1% less than the previous year.
DERK said that the hydrological situation was significantly worse in the past year compared to 2021, resulting in a 29% decrease in hydrobased electricity production to 4,460 GWh. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 2% to 9,629 GWh.
Wind farms connected to the transmission system produced 390 GWh, 2% more than the previous year. The production of small-scale renewable energy facilities increased by 3.5% to 537 GWh.
Consumption of customers connected to the transmission network decreased by 4% to 1,124 GWh, while distribution consumption increased by 1% to 10,546 GWh. Household consumption amounted to 4,929 GWh.
The difference between total production and consumption in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2022 amounted to 2,978 GWh, which, along with Bulgaria, places Bosnia and Herzegovina as the only country in southeastern Europe with a surplus in the electricity balance.
In 2022, 3,947 GWh of electricity were exported, which is 36% less than in the previous year. Electricity imports also decreased by 38% to 868 GWh.
