Operations at the Bitola Thermal Power Plant, a significant coal-fired energy provider in North Macedonia, have been interrupted following a technical failure. On April 14, Unit 3 was taken offline due to a rupture in the boiler system’s piping, necessitating its immediate disconnection from the national electricity grid.
In response to this incident, the plant’s operator, ESM, has commenced efforts to restore service by bringing another unit back online. Unit 1 is anticipated to be synchronized with the grid shortly, with plans for reconnection set for the next day. This proactive measure is critical for maintaining system stability during the repair period.
Prior to this disruption, the Bitola facility was already functioning at a reduced capacity. Favorable hydrological conditions and lower electricity consumption had permitted operations with only one active unit. This operational strategy is expected to persist in the near future despite the current challenges faced by Unit 3.
Authorities have emphasized that transitioning to an alternative unit is essential for ensuring a continuous electricity supply while necessary repairs are executed on the affected equipment. The situation underscores the importance of operational flexibility within energy systems, especially during periods of unexpected technical failures.
