Albania’s ALPEX Initiates €3 Million Digital Trading Platform Upgrade

The ALPEX electricity exchange has embarked on a significant enhancement of its operational capabilities by awarding a contract worth approximately €3 million to a consortium led by ATHEX, a prominent Greek exchange. This initiative aims to implement a new digital trading and clearing system that will modernize the existing market infrastructure, following a thorough competitive tender process.

The consortium, which also includes the Hellenic Energy Exchange and the clearing specialist Enex Clear, is tasked with creating an advanced electronic platform designed to facilitate both day-ahead and intraday electricity trading. ALPEX anticipates that this new system will replace current solutions entirely, providing market participants with expedited execution times, low-latency performance, and secure anonymous trading options.

In addition to improving domestic trading mechanisms, the platform is set to connect the Albanian and Kosovo electricity markets with established European trading frameworks. This integration will enable participation in key mechanisms such as the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC), which are essential for fostering deeper regional and European market integration.

The implementation of this project is projected to span up to 54 months, underscoring the technical challenges involved in aligning national markets with broader European systems. Established in October 2020 by Albania’s OST and Kosovo’s KOSTT transmission system operators, ALPEX aims to cultivate a more competitive power market through these advancements.
