90 MW Solar Project with 36 MWh Battery Storage Commences in Serbia

Serbia is witnessing a significant advancement in its renewable energy sector with the initiation of the Noćaj 1 solar project, which is set to feature a 90 MW solar capacity paired with a 36 MWh battery storage system. This project, located near Sremska Mitrovica, marks a critical step for Fortis Renewable Energy as it transitions from planning to active construction, following the signing of pivotal contracts in early 2026.

The Turkish firm Kontrolmatik has been contracted to manage the design, supply, and construction of this facility. The inclusion of an on-site battery energy storage system underscores the project’s commitment to enhancing energy storage capabilities within Serbia, an area that has seen growing interest and investment.

Central to the operational framework of Noćaj 1 is its energy storage component, which will be executed by Pomega Enerji Depolama Teknoloji, a subsidiary within the Kontrolmatik Group. This strategic move aims to bolster grid flexibility and stability, essential attributes for integrating renewable energy sources into Serbia’s electricity infrastructure.

Noćaj 1 is part of a broader strategy by Fortis Energy to expand its solar portfolio in Serbia, which currently encompasses approximately 270 MW across various projects. This includes plans for the Noćaj 2 facility and follows Fortis’s recent acquisition of a 180 MW solar project scheduled for mid-2024, which will also incorporate substantial battery storage solutions. Collectively, these initiatives are poised to position Fortis among the leading investors in solar and storage technology within southeastern Europe.

The scale of the Noćaj project has drawn attention from local authorities, who have noted that the Macva area development will cover hundreds of hectares of privately owned land. Its potential capacity could rival a significant portion of Serbia’s existing hydropower resources. With construction permits already secured for various segments of this complex, work can commence without regulatory hindrances.

In addition to Noćaj 1, Fortis Energy is actively enhancing its renewable energy presence in Serbia through other projects. The company recently established a network connection agreement for the Erdevik solar project, which will add another 110 MW capacity along with battery storage in the nearby municipality of Sid. Furthermore, Fortis is advancing three wind projects that together will contribute nearly 500 MW and operates several biogas plants, thereby solidifying its role as a diversified player in Serbia’s renewable energy landscape.
