The belief that there is still time to act may prove to be dangerously misleading, as the region grapples with pressing energy challenges.
Financial implications constitute the first major consequence of delay. When modernization efforts are postponed, aging energy systems become increasingly costly to maintain. Older lignite power plants incur higher operating expenses, leading to a decline in efficiency and an increase in reliance on imports. Each megawatt not produced domestically incurs costs at regional or European wholesale prices, which are beyond Serbia’s control. Thus, procrastination does not equate to savings; rather, it results in escalating expenses over time.
Similarly, delays in diversifying gas sources exacerbate geopolitical vulnerabilities. A failure to diversify energy supplies leaves countries exposed and reliant on a limited number of alternatives during potential disruptions.
