The energy landscape in Serbia is witnessing significant advancements as the Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS) implements a new self-propelled conveyor system at the Drmno open-pit mine located in Kostolac. This development, which is scheduled to commence production in April, represents an investment of 10.6 million euros aimed at modernizing the country’s mining operations.
In a noteworthy achievement, the Drmno mine reached a historic output of over 10 million tons of coal in 2025, marking its highest production level to date. EPS management has underscored the importance of ongoing upgrades to heavy machinery as essential for enhancing productivity and ensuring long-term energy security. This milestone reflects not only operational success but also strategic positioning within the regional energy market.
The EPS mining division, which encompasses operations across both Kolubara and Kostolac, reported a 7% increase in coal production for 2025 compared to 2024. The integration of modern machinery is seen as pivotal in improving operational efficiency and securing a more dependable coal supply for Serbia’s energy grid. This focus on modernization aligns with broader goals to enhance the reliability and sustainability of Serbia’s energy resources.
