Serbia possesses significant untapped geothermal energy resources that have the potential to play a key role in the country’s energy transition. Ivan Jankovic, Deputy Minister of Mining and Energy, highlighted the importance of incorporating geothermal energy into Serbia’s overall energy strategy.
As part of an initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency in state-owned buildings, the Ministry of Mining and Energy has supported geological surveys to evaluate both hydro-geothermal and petro-geothermal potential. These surveys were carried out at two major government facilities in Belgrade.
Preliminary results from the first site revealed strong geothermal capacity, indicating that the location is well-suited for implementing environmentally friendly and energy-efficient climate control systems. At the second site, studies suggest that a geothermal heat pump system could meet at least 85% of the heating needs. This represents a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions and increasing reliance on locally sourced renewable energy.
These efforts reflect Serbia’s growing commitment to cleaner energy solutions and showcase how government infrastructure can serve as a model for sustainable energy practices.
