Romania’s Electricity Market Displays Stability Amid Price Variability

The Romanian electricity market, managed by the OPCOM exchange, has demonstrated a stable operational environment despite ongoing price fluctuations. In March 2026, the average price for electricity on the day-ahead market was recorded at 105.15 euros/MWh. This figure marks a slight decrease of 1.14% compared to March 2025, while showing a notable increase of 5.41% from February 2026, when it was 99.75 euros/MWh.

Market activity remained robust, with the traded volume on the day-ahead market reaching 1.36 million MWh in March. This reflects a marginal year-on-year increase of 0.68%, although it is down by 8.08% from February’s figures. The average trading volume during this period was 1,824.9 MWh per hour, indicating consistent engagement in the market.

The total transaction value for March amounted to 148.1 million euros, which represents a 2.96% rise compared to the same month last year but reflects a decrease of 1.43% from February’s total. Notably, the day-ahead market accounted for 29.89% of forecasted net consumption, underscoring significant participation levels among market stakeholders.

In contrast, activity on the intraday market showed mixed results, with a total of 158,095.2 MWh traded in March. This figure indicates a substantial decline of 22.35% compared to March 2025; however, it is up by 18.36% from February’s trading volume. The average price in this segment settled at 88.02 euros/MWh, which is down by 7.29% year-on-year and shows a decrease of 5.13% relative to the previous month.

The ongoing dynamics within Romania’s electricity market suggest that while there are fluctuations in pricing and volume, overall stability remains a key characteristic of current operations, reflecting broader trends in energy consumption and regulatory frameworks across Southeast Europe.
