Romania: Law on the sale of agricultural land – side effect warnings

The draft law that restricts the sale and use of agricultural land, passed by the Romanian Parliament, will hinder the planned investments in renewable energy projects, according to the Employers’ Organization of Renewable Sources of Energy in Romania (PATRES) and the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA).

The ruling coalition referred the law to the Constitutional Court, but the court rejected the objections, and now the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is supposed to promulgate it. The law includes a series of restrictions for the purchase of agricultural land, which will adversely affect investors in the future renewable energy projects in the country.

Last week, the Romanian Association of Oil Exploration and Production Companies (ROPEPCA) said that the law which changes the conditions of sale and use of agricultural land could block new investments in oil and gas sector.
