Petrobrazi Refinery Enhances Wastewater Management with €20 Million Investment

OMV Petrom has announced the completion of a significant modernization initiative at its Petrobrazi refinery, involving an investment of €20 million aimed at upgrading wastewater management systems. This project is part of a strategic effort to enhance the environmental performance and operational reliability of one of Romania’s vital refining facilities.

The upgrade includes comprehensive overhauls of treatment installations, such as enclosing existing wastewater basins and introducing advanced systems for capturing and processing gaseous emissions produced during treatment. The gases extracted from these processes now undergo a multi-stage purification chain that incorporates chemical processing, activated carbon filtration, and final thermal oxidation, leading to markedly improved emission control.

Company officials have highlighted that this modernization aligns with stricter environmental standards and long-term sustainability goals. The initiative reflects OMV Petrom’s commitment to reducing the ecological footprint of its operations while enhancing plant efficiency through continued technological investments.

Over the past two decades, the Petrobrazi refinery has seen continuous transformation. Since 2005, OMV Petrom has allocated more than €2 billion toward upgrading various installations, which has significantly improved energy performance and prepared the facility for a gradual transition to low-carbon energy products.

Looking ahead, OMV Petrom is pursuing an even larger development program estimated at around €750 million. This initiative will establish a dedicated unit for producing sustainable aviation fuel and hydrotreated vegetable oil while integrating green hydrogen into the production process. The new facility aims to facilitate the decarbonization of transport fuels, thereby reinforcing Romania’s position within the evolving energy landscape.
