North Macedonia: Renalfa IPP Expands Oslomej Solar Project with New Battery Storage

The renewable energy landscape in North Macedonia is set to gain a significant boost as Renalfa IPP initiates the deployment of a substantial battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Oslomej solar power project. This development represents a strategic enhancement of the region’s clean energy infrastructure, which is increasingly vital for meeting growing energy demands and sustainability goals.

The newly announced 50 MW / 200 MWh battery storage facility will complement the existing 65.8 MW solar power plant, operational since 2023. The integration of this storage capacity is anticipated to bolster grid balancing capabilities, thereby enhancing the overall reliability of the energy supply, while also providing improved operational flexibility. This will facilitate better management of fluctuations in solar power output, which is crucial for maintaining grid stability as renewable sources become more prevalent.

The Oslomej complex has been established on the site of a former lignite mine, showcasing a commitment to transitioning from traditional fossil fuel-based energy production to sustainable alternatives. This initiative aligns with North Macedonia’s broader strategy to repurpose former coal sites into renewable energy hubs, which is essential for achieving long-term decarbonization goals.

This project has gained recognition from both regional and international entities, underscoring its significance as a key investment in green energy within the Western Balkans. In 2024, it was designated as one of the flagship projects under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), highlighting its critical role in facilitating regional energy transition efforts.

The financial support for this ambitious initiative has been facilitated through Finance in Motion, leveraging resources from the Green for Growth Fund. This backing underscores North Macedonia’s commitment to moving away from fossil fuels toward cleaner and more sustainable electricity generation practices.

Renalfa IPP, formed through a partnership between the Renalfa Solarpro Group and French investment firm RGreen Invest, secured this project via a state tender conducted in 2021, which encompassed the development of two additional 50 MW solar power plants. This strategic collaboration aims not only to enhance local energy production but also to contribute significantly to regional sustainability efforts.
