Hungary: 223 MW solar power plant launched

 

The largest solar power plant in Hungary, with 223 MW installed capacity, has been inaugurated in Mezocsat in the northern part of the country. The new solar power plant, which consists of 466,000 solar panels, will produce 372 GWh of electricity per year. The solar power plant will contribute about 8% of the country’s solar-generated electricity. 

Hungarian Minister of Energy Csaba Lantos said that the share of electricity coming from renewable sources must be increased in the country’s energy mix, new production and storage capacities must be built and infrastructure developments must be implemented to satisfy the growing demand for electricity. He remembered that, according to recently published analysis, the share of solar energy in the electricity mix in Hungary is the sixth largest in the world and the third largest in Europe. 

Last year, a record 1,100 MW of new solar capacity was built in the country, increasing the total installed capacity to over 4,850 MW, which could cover more than two-thirds of the country’s average electricity consumption.
