Hidroelectrica Achieves Record Investments Amid Hydrological Challenges in 2025

In 2025, Romanian hydropower leader Hidroelectrica reported a remarkable investment performance, channeling approximately 156 million euros into modernization and new generation initiatives. This investment represents a significant 32% increase over the previous year, underscoring the company’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities despite encountering one of the most challenging hydrological conditions recorded.

The investments were primarily aimed at infrastructure upgrades and expanding production capacity, aligning with Hidroelectrica’s strategy to solidify its status as Romania’s foremost producer of renewable energy. However, this robust investment activity unfolded during a period marked by notably weak hydrological conditions, which severely impacted electricity generation in the first three quarters of the year.

As a consequence of these adverse conditions, hydroelectric output fell by 14% year-on-year, resulting in 2025 being noted as the weakest year for hydroelectric production in Romania’s history. Despite these challenges, Hidroelectrica managed to report revenues of 1.92 billion euros, reflecting a 5% increase from the previous year. The consolidated net profit was recorded at 675 million euros, affirming the company’s position as one of Romania’s most profitable enterprises amidst a difficult market landscape.

The management team credited this financial resilience later in the year to effective strategies such as prudent water management, timely electricity sales tactics, and optimization within its commercial portfolio. Additionally, 2025 was marked as pivotal for advancing long-term modernization commitments and capacity expansion efforts.

Hidroelectrica also made significant strides in the retail electricity market, expanding its supply portfolio to encompass 1.16 million consumption points, nearly double that of the previous year. This expansion not only reinforces its role as a leading generator but also positions it as a substantial player in electricity supply.

The company operates a total of 188 hydropower plants, boasting a combined installed capacity of 6.4 GW. Alongside this, it manages the 108 MW Crucea wind farm. As Romania’s largest producer of renewable electricity, Hidroelectrica also holds the distinction of having the country’s largest customer portfolio in the electricity sector.
