EVN North Macedonia Launches 10 MW Battery Storage System for Solar Support

In a significant development for the energy sector in North Macedonia, EVN North Macedonia has officially launched the nation’s largest licensed battery energy storage system. This facility is strategically located adjacent to the company’s solar power plant in Probištip and represents a pivotal advancement in the country’s efforts to enhance renewable energy integration.

The newly commissioned system boasts an installed capacity of 10 MW and can store up to 20 MWh of electricity. Plans are already underway for a future expansion that aims to increase the total storage capacity to 40 MWh, thereby significantly bolstering the region’s energy resilience.

This battery system utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology, incorporating battery units from CATL alongside an innovative energy conversion system developed by K Star. The integration of this storage solution with the Probištip solar plant is expected to enhance the flexibility, stability, and overall efficiency of renewable electricity production, addressing some of the inherent challenges associated with intermittent renewable sources.

The commissioning of this facility aligns with a broader regional trend where there is an increasing focus on battery energy storage systems (BESS). Utilities across Southeast Europe are actively seeking technological advancements that can stabilize their power systems while accommodating growing amounts of renewable energy generation. This strategic move by EVN North Macedonia underscores the importance of such investments in achieving a more sustainable and reliable energy landscape.
