European solar and wind energy production trends: Declines in solar, growth in wind for early January 2025

During the week of December 30, solar photovoltaic energy production decreased across all major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. Germany saw the largest decline, with solar energy production dropping by 29%. France and Portugal followed, each experiencing a 25% decrease in production. The Italian market registered the smallest decline at 6.6%, while Spain experienced a 17% drop, AleaSoft reports.

In the week of January 6, according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s solar energy production forecasts, solar energy production is expected to rise in Germany, while it will continue to decrease in Italy and Spain. In the first week of January, wind energy production increased in most major European markets compared to the previous week. Germany and France saw the largest increases, with production rising by 148% and 140%, respectively. The Iberian markets also saw increases, with Portugal rising by 12% and Spain by 19%. Meanwhile, the Italian market recorded a 65% drop in wind energy production, reversing the trend after two weeks of growth.

On Sunday, January 5, the Portuguese market reached its second-highest wind energy production level in history, generating 108 GWh. The following day, the French market reached its second-highest production value ever, generating 416 GWh.

For the second week of 2025, according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s wind energy production forecasts, production is expected to increase in Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, and Germany, while it will decrease in France, AleaSoft reports.
