DEDDIE Advances Smart Meter Integration and Data Management in Greece

The Greek electricity distribution operator DEDDIE is progressing towards the completion of its centralized data platform, which is expected to fundamentally enhance the monitoring of electricity consumption across the country. By the end of 2026, the system aims to validate measurement data for approximately 2.3 million metering points, marking a significant leap in operational efficiency.

At the beginning of this year, DEDDIE launched its Meter Data Management platform, which signifies a comprehensive digital transformation. This platform integrates sophisticated smart metering technology with an upgraded internal IT architecture, allowing for nearly instantaneous collection and processing of consumption data, thus moving away from traditional manual methods that often result in delays.

Equipped with this advanced infrastructure, DEDDIE is positioning itself to implement more flexible pricing structures in the future. Although widespread adoption of demand response programs is not expected immediately, the necessary technical framework is now established to facilitate such initiatives as market dynamics and consumer engagement evolve towards enhanced load management.

Currently, DEDDIE provides certified monthly usage data for around 225,000 high-consumption customers. However, this coverage is anticipated to expand significantly as more smart meters are integrated into the centralized system over the coming months.

This rapid scale-up is driven by two key factors: an accelerated rollout of new smart meters and a directive from Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy mandating DEDDIE to connect approximately 1.3 million previously deployed smart meters to the upgraded platform within a five-month timeframe. In addition, plans are underway for the installation of about one million additional smart meters by the end of this year, further enhancing the system’s reach and digital capabilities.
