Croatia: HEP submits environmental impact assessment for 12 MW floating solar power plant

Croatia’s state-owned power utility HEP has taken a key step toward expanding its renewable energy portfolio by submitting an application for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a proposed floating solar power plant. According to the Croatian Ministry of Environmental Protection, the plant would have an installed capacity of 12 megawatts (MW) and be located on the reservoir of the Dubrava hydropower plant in the town of Prelog, in northern Croatia’s Medjimurje region.

The proposed floating solar installation would cover approximately 8.9 hectares of the reservoir surface. The Ministry has opened a public consultation period, allowing citizens and stakeholders to provide feedback on the project until 23 May.

This initiative reflects growing interest in floating solar technology, which allows for efficient land use and reduces water evaporation while supporting the integration of more renewable energy into national grids. If approved, the project would mark one of the most significant floating solar developments in Croatia to date.
