Bulgaria’s Shift to Electricity Imports Highlights Wind Energy’s Growing Role

In early 2026, Bulgaria experienced a significant shift in its electricity balance, transitioning from being a net exporter to a net importer of electricity. This change has brought renewed attention to the strategic importance of renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, in ensuring the stability and reliability of the national energy system.

Recent data from the electricity transmission system operator ESO indicates that wind farms generated approximately 356,824 MWh of electricity between January 1 and March 15, representing a year-on-year increase of nearly 7%. Wind energy accounted for 27.56% of total renewable electricity production during this timeframe, underscoring its growing significance within Bulgaria’s energy landscape.

Despite these advancements, wind energy still constitutes a relatively modest portion of Bulgaria’s installed capacity. Currently, there are about 711 MW of operational wind capacity, which contributes just over 10% to the overall renewable energy capacity. This suggests considerable potential for further development in this sector.

The broader context of Bulgaria’s energy situation reveals why wind generation has become increasingly vital. In early 2025, the country reported an electricity trade surplus exceeding 516,000 MWh. However, the situation has reversed in 2026, resulting in a deficit exceeding 508,000 MWh. This shift is attributed to a decline in electricity production by over 5%, alongside a rise in consumption nearing 4.7%. Concurrently, coal-fired generation has diminished due to economic pressures, while nuclear output has been adversely affected by maintenance-related outages.

In light of these challenges, wind energy has emerged as a crucial stabilizing factor for Bulgaria’s power system. Its capacity to generate electricity during periods of high demand has helped mitigate reductions in conventional generation and limit vulnerability to fluctuations in fossil fuel prices.

The Bulgarian Wind Energy Association (BGWEA) highlights that current trends necessitate an expansion of wind capacity. Enhancing domestic wind generation is essential for boosting energy security, decreasing reliance on imports, and improving the resilience of Bulgaria’s power infrastructure.
