Bulgaria: Electricity production reached 26 TWh in 2023

Production of electricity in Bulgaria in the period between 1 January and 20 August 2023 decreased by 22% compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 26 TWh. Electricity consumption also decreased, by 5% to 23.4 TWh, according to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO.

Surplus electricity amounted to 2.59 TWh in 2023, 70% less than in 2022. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 20.53 TWh of electricity in 2023, which is 27% less than in 2022, According to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO,.

The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network rose by 49% to 1,537.6 GWh, while RES share in the distribution network increased by 7% to 1,603.4 GWh.
