The thermal power plant Ugljevik is anticipated to reconnect to the electricity grid by 20 April, following a comprehensive maintenance overhaul. This upgrade, initially scheduled for September, was expedited due to the plant’s earlier suspension of operations attributed to insufficient coal supplies.
Lasting approximately 45 days, the maintenance program is reportedly on track for completion by the projected date. The Ministry of Energy’s recommendation for an immediate overhaul was accepted by RiTE Ugljevik’s management, reflecting a proactive approach to restore production capabilities.
Upon successful completion of the maintenance work, Ugljevik is expected to return to regular production immediately. This resumption is critical as the facility has been offline since the start of the year due to coal shortages, which halted its electricity generation activities.
Energy Minister Petar Djokic has indicated that additional preparations are underway for the exploitation of the Ugljevik Istok 2 coal deposit. The Bosnian government secured this resource through acquiring Comsar Energy RS, with the transaction valued at approximately 123 million euros. This acquisition underscores the strategic importance of local coal resources in supporting energy production.
Financial challenges have plagued TPP Ugljevik, as evidenced by its reported loss of 14.2 million euros for 2025. The losses were primarily linked to reduced revenues from electricity sales and lower-than-expected market prices, highlighting ongoing economic pressures within Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy sector.
As TPP Ugljevik prepares for its operational comeback, stakeholders will be closely monitoring its integration back into the power market and its impact on regional electricity supply dynamics.
