In January 2026, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) reported a significant rise in gross electricity production, reaching 800 GWh. This marks a 7.82% increase from the 746 GWh produced in January 2025. The generation mix for this month indicates a strong reliance on renewable sources, with hydropower plants contributing 54.8%, followed by thermal power plants at 38.4%, and wind farms accounting for 6.8%.
The net electricity production during the same period totaled 760 GWh, where hydropower plants generated 435 GWh, thermal facilities produced 270 GWh, and wind energy contributed 55 GWh. Notably, electricity imports saw a decline, totaling 131 GWh, down from 254 GWh in January 2025. Meanwhile, exports also decreased to 55 GWh, compared to 148 GWh in the previous year.
The coal sector experienced a marked downturn in output during January 2026. Brown coal production fell to 207,109 tons, representing a substantial 39.9% decrease from the previous year’s figure of 344,755 tons. Additionally, lignite production decreased slightly to 103,517 tons, down by 5.8%, while coke production also declined by 18.3%, totaling 26,190 tons.
This shift towards increased electricity generation while simultaneously reducing reliance on fossil fuels underscores a significant transformation in FBiH’s energy landscape. The changes reflect evolving demand patterns and an ongoing transition towards a more diversified fuel mix.
