Albania’s ALPEX Reports Mixed Performance in March 2026 Trading

The Albanian electricity exchange, ALPEX, has experienced a notable year-on-year increase in trading value, despite a decline in monthly trading volumes for March 2026. Total electricity traded on the day-ahead market reached 165.32 GWh, which reflects a decrease of 16.3% from February 2026. However, this figure represents a substantial growth of 72.2% compared to the same month in the previous year, March 2025.

Within this total volume, 111.4 GWh was attributed to the Kosovo bidding zone while 104.5 GWh was designated for the Albania bidding zone. The average market price across ALPEX was recorded at €96.89/MWh, consistent for both zones, indicating a stable pricing environment despite fluctuations in volume.

In terms of financial performance, ALPEX reported a total transaction value of approximately €15.1 million for March 2026, marking an impressive increase of 48% compared to March 2025. This growth underscores the exchange’s expanding role in regional electricity trading and its increasing importance within the energy market.

Established in October 2020 by the Albanian Transmission System Operator (OST) and its counterpart in Kosovo (KOSTT), ALPEX has grown significantly since its inception. The first auction on this platform was conducted in April 2023, and it currently boasts a membership base of 36 entities operating across both Albania and Kosovo bidding zones. This development highlights the ongoing integration of regional energy markets and the strategic significance of ALPEX as a facilitator of cross-border electricity trade.
