Solar and wind energy trends in Europe: Record solar output and shifting wind production in late May 2025

In the week of May 26, solar photovoltaic energy production increased in most major European markets compared to the previous week. Italy recorded the largest increase, with a 22 percent rise, while Portugal showed the smallest growth at 3.1 percent. France and Spain also saw increases of 4.8 percent and 14 percent, respectively. The Iberian Peninsula marked its fourth consecutive week of growth in solar production. However, Germany experienced a decline in solar energy production for the second week in a row, this time with a decrease of 2.8 percent.

During the same week, Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy all achieved solar photovoltaic energy production records. On Tuesday, May 27, Portugal set an all-time high with 28 GWh of solar production. That same day, Spain reached its highest-ever May production level with 205 GWh, which also stands as the second highest in its history. On May 30, both France and Italy reached new all-time highs, producing 143 GWh and 156 GWh, respectively.

For the first week of June, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that solar photovoltaic generation will rise in Germany but will decrease in Italy and Spain.

In the last week of May, wind energy production increased in the French market for the second week in a row, this time by 0.8 percent. Conversely, wind production declined in Germany, Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula following gains in the previous week. Portugal and Spain recorded the steepest drops, at 45 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Germany had the smallest decline, at 1.6 percent, while Italy saw a 21 percent reduction.

On May 28, the French market recorded its second-highest wind energy production for a May month in history, reaching 247 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of June 2, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects that wind energy production will rise in the markets of the Iberian Peninsula, Germany, and France, while a decrease is expected in Italy, AleaSoft reports.
