Serbia and France to collaborate on nuclear energy development

The Serbian Government has announced a new collaboration with France in the fields of nuclear energy and strategic raw materials, formalized during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Belgrade.

A letter of intent was signed between the Serbian Ministry of Mining and Energy and France’s state-owned energy company EDF. This agreement marks a significant step towards evaluating the development of nuclear energy in Serbia, which is planning to lift its ban on the construction of nuclear power plants. As part of this initiative, Serbia recently launched a tender to prepare a preliminary technical study on the civil use of nuclear energy.

Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic emphasized Serbia’s pursuit of top-tier partners, noting that EDF, as the world’s largest nuclear operator, offers unparalleled experience in all stages of nuclear power plant development. She highlighted that the signing of a Memorandum with five ministries and 20 scientific institutions and energy companies in July represents a crucial move towards unifying local expertise and scientific communities.

Serbia anticipates significant support from EDF, particularly in knowledge exchange, capacity building for local experts, and technical assistance in establishing a comprehensive legal framework for nuclear energy.
