Romania: Electricity consumption increases in 2024, while production declines and imports surge

According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s electricity consumption in the first ten months of 2024 reached 41.55 TWh, marking a 1.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Industrial electricity consumption was 31.54 TWh, up by 0.9%, while household consumption amounted to 9.69 TWh, a 3% increase. Public lighting consumption, however, fell by 2.4%, totaling approximately 327.2 GWh.

Total electricity production in Romania for the first ten months of 2024 stood at 43.75 TWh, representing an 8.3% decline from the previous year. Production from thermal power plants decreased by 1.2%, reaching 14.06 TWh, while hydropower production fell by 21.3%, totaling 12.53 TWh. Production from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant also decreased by 4.3%, amounting to 8.91 TWh. Wind power production dropped by 18.2% to 5.07 TWh, but solar power generation saw a significant increase, rising by 55.1% to 3.18 TWh.

Electricity exports for January-October 2024 were 9.1 TWh, 3.6% lower than the same period in 2023, while imports surged by 59.7%, reaching 10.82 TWh.

In terms of primary energy resources, Romania’s total production in the first ten months of 2024 was 14,095.5 million tons of oil equivalent, 4.9% less than in 2023. Coal production declined by 16.9% to 1,594.8 million tons of oil equivalent, oil production fell by 3.9% to 2,246.4 million tons of oil equivalent, while natural gas production increased by 1.2% to 6,238.8 million tons of oil equivalent.
