Romania: Electricity consumption and production trends for January-August

Data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS) reveals that Romania’s electricity consumption in the first eight months of 2024 reached 33.56 TWh, reflecting a 1.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Industrial electricity consumption accounted for 25.5 TWh, a rise of 1.1% year-on-year. Household consumption also grew, totaling 7.79 TWh, which is a 2.9% increase. However, public lighting consumption fell by 3.4%, amounting to approximately 269 GWh.

On the production side, total electricity generation in the same period was 35.64 TWh, down 9% from 2023. Production from thermal power plants saw a slight increase of 1.1%, reaching 11.38 TWh. In contrast, hydropower generation dropped significantly by 24.7% to 10.59 TWh, while electricity from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant decreased by 4.2% to 7 TWh. Wind power production also fell by 16.9%, totaling 4.1 TWh, although solar power generation surged by 60.5%, reaching 2.57 TWh.

Regarding trade, electricity exports from Romania totaled 7.17 TWh, down 9.2% compared to last year, while imports surged by 60.5% to 8.35 TWh.

In terms of primary energy resources, total production for January-August 2024 was 11,330.2 million tons of oil equivalent, marking a 5.4% decrease from the previous year. Coal production saw a significant decline of 18.4% to 1,264.5 million tons of oil equivalent, while oil production fell by 3.5% to 1,808.1 million tons of oil equivalent. Conversely, natural gas production rose slightly by 1.4%, totaling 5,056.2 million tons of oil equivalent.
