Romania: Electricity consumption and production in 2024

According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s electricity consumption in the first eleven months of 2024 totaled 46.03 TWh, representing a 1.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Industrial electricity consumption accounted for 34.95 TWh, up by 1.5% from last year, while household electricity consumption reached 10.72 TWh, reflecting a 3.2% increase. In contrast, public lighting consumption declined by 4.7%, totaling approximately 352.9 GWh.

Electricity production in Romania for the first eleven months of 2024 amounted to 48.01 TWh, which is an 8.3% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Production from thermal power plants fell by 1.6%, reaching 15.73 TWh. Hydropower production saw a significant decline of 21.8%, totaling 13.41 TWh, while output from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant decreased by 2.8%, amounting to 9.89 TWh. Wind power production dropped by 19% to 5.61 TWh, while solar power generation surged by 57.1%, reaching 3.37 TWh.

Romania’s electricity exports during January-November 2024 were 9.86 TWh, down by 5.4% compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, electricity imports rose by 57.9%, reaching 12.23 TWh.

Total primary energy production in Romania for the first eleven months of 2024 was 15,477.2 thousand tons of oil equivalent, a 4.7% decrease from 2023. Coal production dropped by 15.8% to 1,758.7 thousand tons of oil equivalent, oil production fell by 4.2% to 2,455.8 thousand tons of oil equivalent, while natural gas production increased by 1%, reaching 6,912 thousand tons of oil equivalent.
