North Macedonia, RKE has proposed the introduction of four block tariffs for electricity as of 1 July

The North Macedonian Energy Regulatory Commission (RKE) has proposed the introduction of four block tariffs for electricity as of 1 July, according to which, customers with higher consumption will pay higher prices.

According to the proposal, there will be four tariffs for residential consumers: up to 210 kWh per month, between 210 and 420 kWh, between 420 and 630 kWh and above 630 kWh per month. Based on current prices, those who consume up to 420 kWh will pay 6 % higher price, while those who consume up to 210 kWh will pay 5 % lower price.

However, some experts believe that the regulation is not just, because consumers in large cities, such as the capital Skopje, are connected to district heating system and will not use electricity for heating.

According to the analysis by RKE, there are around 800,000 electricity meters in the country, out of which, some 140,000 record consumption lower than 100 kWh per month, while the majority of metering points record consumption between 300 and 700 kWh.
