North Macedonia: Electricity production drops in May 2025 amid higher imports and strong solar output

In May 2025, North Macedonia’s total electricity consumption reached 376,989 megawatt-hours (MWh), while natural gas usage totaled 3.7 million cubic meters. Coal consumption stood at 341,047 tons, and petroleum product usage amounted to 97,186 tons, according to the State Statistical Office.

Domestic production covered 89 percent of the electricity consumed during the month, and nearly all coal—99.9 percent—was used for electricity generation.

Gross electricity production totaled 335,609 MWh in May, marking an 11.2 percent decrease compared to the same month in 2024. Thermal power plants generated the largest share, producing 169,706 MWh (50.7 percent), although this represents a decline of 18.1 percent year-over-year. Hydropower plants produced 103,644 MWh (30.9 percent), down 20 percent from the previous May. Wind farms contributed 20,873 MWh (6.2 percent), while biogas facilities generated 4,665 MWh. Solar power plants saw notable output, producing 36,721 MWh, or 10.9 percent of the total.

Electricity imports rose to 109,220 MWh, up from 86,732 MWh in May 2024. Exports also increased, reaching 67,840 MWh compared to 61,082 MWh a year earlier.
