Greece: Possible gas network expansion for DESFA

Greek natural gas transmission system operator – DESFA is currently considering the expansion of gas network in West Macedonia. The latest development plan of DESFA for the 2021-2030 period could include projects for the expansion of gas networks in regions which were not included in the previous iterations of the plan, such as West Macedonia.

However, the extent of gas network extension covered by the plan will depend on the development of gas-fired electricity production projects in the region. Most prominent is the project for the construction of Ptolemaida V power plant by state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC).

DESFA also plans to develop metering stations at Trans-Adriatic (TAP) pipeline project corridor points, as the capacity which will be offered by the pipeline will not be enough to cover regional needs if gas-fired power plants are to be built in West Macedonia region.

Thus, DESFA plans to build three new metering and regulating stations in the Eordea, Kastoria and Aspros areas, worth some 8 million euros. These stations, whose completion is expected by the end of 2022, will enable the development of a mid and low-voltage network for natural gas transmission to these areas.
